What is the difference between 4G and LTE?

While mobile phones were still a novelty and very few people knew what 3G was, the entire telecommunications industry was heavily dependent on it. But as smartphones gradually took over wireless communication and people needed faster internet speeds, the 4G network was born. However, in Vietnam, when you insert a 4G SIM card into a phone, there are two different icons: 4G and LTE.At this point, many people likely have the question: why are service advertisements sometimes called 4G and other times called LTE? What is 4G?

Technically, it is the 4th generation of wireless mobile network technology, succeeding 3G. 4G is better for HD video calls, fast data transmission, and good download capabilities. From the user's perspective, the 4G system will provide reliable, high-speed internet connectivity on electronic devices such as tablets and smartphones.

ITU-R realized that these standards were too high, so neither of the candidates, WIMAX nor LTE, could meet such high internet speeds. However, ITU-R allowed them to be marketed as 4G networks, and from then on, the LTE network entered the global telecommunications landscape.

What is LTE?

LTE stands for Long-Term Evolution – a very high-speed wireless communication standard. When regulatory bodies realized that the minimum speed for 4G was too ambitious and allowed network providers to offer speeds higher than 3G, they were advertised as 4G network providers, accurately described as 4G LTE.

Both of these networks are not the same. LTE offers a much lower network speed than a true 4G network. It also means that the 4G LTE services on the market now do not meet the technical requirements of a 4G wireless network according to ITU-R regulations.

But rest assured, the speed of the 4G LTE network is much faster than 3G. Therefore, you should use LTE when 4G network is not yet supported.

How can 4G LTE provide free voice calls?

From the perspective of a network provider like Vodafone, they can restrict access to users on 2G, 3G, and 4G systems. Vodafone's 4G infrastructure is not infinite, so they limit customer usage by calculating costs.

For handling needs like calls, messages, and systems, it will automatically switch to 2G or 3G mode.

You should note that 4G is designed exclusively to handle high data transmission speeds, so you cannot handle normal mobile network calls through it.

Therefore, network providers that rely entirely on the 4G LTE system need to use another technology to connect calls on the 4G LTE system, which users commonly call VoLTE.

What is VoLTE?

4G networks are often supported by VoLTE, which is a technology that will facilitate making calls over the LTE network instead of using 2G or 3G networks.

At the most basic level, your voice is treated as data. VoLTE is the technology that enables this data transmission during a call. It not only continuously transmits and receives voice calls but also improves call quality without increasing any costs. (Similar to making calls via OTT applications over WIFI).

VoLTE has been implemented for several years.

VoLTE is not a technological breakthrough, and communication applications like Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, etc., also offer so-called free calls based on the system used, similar to VoLTE technology. The only difference is that these applications are not entirely free as they deduct bandwidth from the data plan.

Overall, the internet is significantly impacting the global communication industry. The 4G network will certainly become widespread in Vietnam and related industries.
